(2015–2020)
It gives me great satisfaction as I look back over the 6 years in which the journal has progressed from a totally new entrant to a journal of recognition as on today. The journey of the start of a non-specialty institutional journal is always a hard one as the readership is diverse and to keep the interest of all medical subjects alive, remains a challenging task at all times! I am pleased to say that with the help of the editorial board of the Journal, we could achieve this despite several limitations.
To ensure three issues in print and online format to be ready every 4 months remains a huge challenge especially when the quality of the scientific work must not be lowered. I am immensely grateful to the faculty of Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC) primarily, who rose up to this need and provided me and the editorial board with articles of interest rather than sending to other PubMed indexed journals so that we could publish them and achieve a rating of our own. Cajoling and seeking good quality articles remained my constant job for the first few years as timely production and distribution of the journal is required for achieving indexing from various agencies.
I am pleased to say that we have today achieved the indexing of Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), which is a mandatory indexing step to achieve PubMed Indexing. We are well on our way to register with SCOPUS, which is the largest abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature: scientific journals, books, and conference proceedings. This has some very stringent requirements like 25 to 30 original and review articles annually, institution ethics board clearances for majority research articles, mentioning of clinical trials registry number in articles, etc. We have started focussing more on review and original articles in the last 2 years as the submissions have improved and I am sure we should be able to achieve SCOPUS and PubMed in the next few years under the new team.
I am very grateful to Prof. Deepak Tempe in whose tenure as Dean MAMC and Chairman of the Editorial Board, I was able to start this journal as the founder Editor-in-Chief and the journey of the last 6 years has been ably supported by subsequent Deans as Chairpersons. Prof. Tempe who remains the Chief Patron of the Editorial Board has continued to provide me very close support in editorial corrections for each of the 18 issues over the last 6 years, which I must acknowledge. I also place on record the financial assistance provided by the MAMC Research Society for the first 3 years 2015 to 2017, which was crucial to our journal in the absence of any sponsorship money. Since 2018, MAMC and the GNCTD have been supporting the journal financially. I also would like to thank the successive Deans Prof. Siddharth Ramji, Prof. Sanjay Tyagi, Prof. Sushil Kumar, and Prof. Nandini Sharma for their continuous encouragement and support. I would also like to thank each one of the Faculty of MAMC and others who supported the journal as an author and reviewer. As I hand over the baton to my successor, I am pleased to say that today we have quality articles waiting to be accepted and citations and downloads have significantly improved which are a measure of the Journals’ rating.
Six years have passed and time is ripe to pass the baton to my successor and I am extremely pleased that Prof. Lalit Maini, a dear friend and an able colleague is taking over as the next Editor-in-Chief who has vast experience of working with specialty journals. With his experience, I am sure the journal shall achieve the next goals of achieving indexing in SCOPUS and PubMed in the next few years.
During the course of 18 issues, I had opportunity to write a few editorials on some important issues concerning medical education and health care delivery in India. The first one was “Welcome to MAMCJMS” in the inaugural issue of 2015,[1] followed by “Whither Medical Education and Healthcare” in the second issue of the same year.[2] The third editorial was on “From rote to reasoning: The paradigm shift required in medical entrance examination and beyond” in the first issue of 2016.[3] This was followed by “The history of minimal access surgery in MAMC − Lessons to learn” in the third issue of 2016.[4] Communications Skills Training − A Missing Link in Medical Education Curriculum was an editorial written in the third issue of 2017.[5]
As I look back with satisfaction, having brought the MAMC Journal of Medical Sciences to a level of reckoning for it to be taken further higher, I request each one of you to support my successor with even greater enthusiasm and help our institutional journal reach further heights and glory.
As I move on with satisfaction of a task well achieved, I am reminded of the following lines penned by Robert Frost −
“The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.”
Long live MAMC.
